Filament Cost Calculator
Calculate how much filament a print consumes in dollars. This dedicated material-only tool is useful when you know the slicer-estimated grams and the price paid for a spool. It intentionally excludes electricity, printer hours, labor and selling fees.
Your results
These are estimates based on your supplied inputs, not measured usage or current market prices.
Calculation formula
Material cost per gram = paid spool price ÷ net filament grams. Material cost per plate = used grams × cost per gram. Material cost per item = material cost per plate ÷ finished items. These calculations assume one material at one price and do not include failed attempts.
Worked example
100 g × $0.025 = $2.50 per plate
Four finished parts → $2.50 ÷ 4 = $0.625 per item
From a full 1,000 g spool, a plate needing 100 g allows at most ten such plates before accounting for other waste or failed prints. The remaining-mass estimate describes one full starting spool.
PLA filament cost per gram and per print
The same math works for PLA, PETG and other filament types. Change the actual spool price and net filament weight instead of using a universal price per gram. It is possible to buy a spool advertised as 1 kg whose reel has additional weight; enter only the net plastic mass.
What this estimate does not include
Printing electricity, machine wear, failed print allowances, labor, shipping and post-processing are deliberately not included. For a price that accounts for those costs, use the complete 3D print cost calculator.
What if a print uses two filaments?
Calculate each material separately using its own price and grams, then add both material costs. Do not average filament prices without accounting for their different weights.
